E-Cigs Becoming Mainstream
Learn how e-cigs are now the new normal, and get a peek into the future of vapor smoking
It’s an exciting time to be a vapor smoker!
Once only known to a handful of veteran smokers, e-cigs are now being used by the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Katherine Heigl, Dennis Quaid, Trace Cyrus, and others. And it’s not just the celebrities who are going electric –millions of smokers around the world are making the switch and choosing to live better.
The benefits of e-cigs are well-known to its advocates –no smoke, no tar, no burning, and a realistic smoking experience that leaves out the bad odor, yellow teeth stains, and the high cost of traditional cigarettes. But the good news is that these advantages are becoming common knowledge to more people inside the smoking community in general, as well as the public at large.
It seems vapor smoking is becoming mainstream.
Where We Stand
According to a 2012 Wells Fargo Tobacco Talk survey, approximately 30,000 tobacco retailers, wholesalers, and trade contacts believe that e-cigs are not just a fad, but rather here to stay. Based on the survey, it is estimated the e-cig industry brings in about $300 million in annual revenue –a figure that is predicted to more than triple to $1 billion and more in the coming years. The survey also indicates there are more than 2.5 million vapor smokers, and the percentage of adults trying e-cigs is skyrocketing.
A recent press release out of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that in 2011 nearly 1 in 5 adults who smoked traditional cigarettes had also tried e-cigs. This number was up 10% from 2010. What’s more, currently about 6% of all adults have tried vapor smoking, which is nearly double the estimate from 2010.
In both 2010 and 2011, the use of e-cigs is significantly more prominent among current smokers, compared to former or non-smokers. And in the span of just one year, e-cig awareness jumped from about 4 in 10 adults in 2010, to 6 in 10 in 2011.
“E-cigarette use is growing rapidly,” says CDC Director Tom Frieden, M.D., adding, “There is still a lot we don’t know about these products, including whether they will decrease or increase use of traditional cigarettes.”
This gap in knowledge is where contentions arise over the safety of vapor smoking. However, despite the concern over FDA encroachment and confusing regulation policies, the popularity of e-cigs has continued to rise.
According to Wells Fargo’s most recent Tobacco Talk quarterly survey, nearly 90% of respondents confirmed that e-cig sales have accelerated significantly from January to March of 2013, compared to the last quarter of 2012. In fact, the annual growth of e-cigs has now reached above 30% for the first time ever.
Where We’re Going
While vapor smokers can rejoice over the widespread acceptance of their favorite e-cigs (a conclusion evident from their growing popularity), the future of e-cigs, while hopeful, remains to be fully seen.
When it comes to the future of vapor smoking, the serious “wild card” at play continues to be government taxation. For now, vapor smokers benefit from loose local and federal regulations. However, as the industry expands, the anticipated effect of its success is likely more pronounced FDA involvement. Taxed e-cigs will drive their cost up, and policies against certain e-juice flavors could put a brake on current market growth. Because of this, many e-cig companies are preparing for the inevitable change.
Nevertheless, some experts say the growth the e-cig industry is currently experiencing is just the beginning, and that the number of vapor smokers in 2014 could top an unprecedented 10 million.
The increasing social acceptance of using e-cigs in public places is also fueling its popularity, and will undoubtedly continue to do so in the future. Many “non-smoking” establishments are opening up their doors to vapor smokers, giving users the freedom to smoke when and where they want –a choice that was taken from traditional smokers years ago over concern about secondhand smoke (and rightfully so).
Bonnie Herzog, Director of Beverage, Tobacco, and Consumer research at Wells Fargo, draws a parallel between energy drinks and e-cigs, remarking that like the beverage companies, Big Tobacco may be overlooking the beginning stages of an industry-changing product.
“While difficult to predict, we think it is possible that consumption of e-cigarettes could outpace traditional cigarettes over the next decade, especially given the rapid pace of innovation and consumers’ demand for reduced harm products,” says Herzog.
